Why Calder House?
A man was walking along the beach one day. Ahead he noticed another, older man picking up a starfish that had become stranded on the sand and throwing it back into the sea.
“Why do you bother?” the man asked him. “The beach goes on for miles and countless starfish get stranded every day. You can’t really make a difference.”
The old man looked at the starfish in his hand and then he threw it to safety among the waves. “I can make a difference to this one,” he replied.
Countless children feel stranded at school. For some Calder House can make a real difference.

“As a result of the excellent teaching at Calder House both our sons have made significant progress and achieved level 4's at KS2. We are delighted that they are now coping extremely well in a mainstream secondary.”Former pupil’s parent |

Our Admissions Policy at Calder House is to admit children with Specific Learning Difficulties, who are of average overall intelligence but currently underachieving in respect of their potential. We offer these children intensive remedial help to enable them to achieve the skill level appropriate to their age and return to mainstream education. At the same time we facilitate access to the National Curriculum at an age appropriate level until such time as their skill levels permit them to access it for themselves. Not all pupils at Calder House have a statement of special educational need, but for any child who does, or for whom English is an additional language, Calder House will satisfy itself that it has, or will acquire, the resources to meet his/her educational and welfare needs. In the event that there is a particular need that cannot be met this will be made clear by the school to the local authority and parents when the offer of a place is made. Calder House is committed to safeguarding the well-being of pupils and our policies on child protection, safer recruitment, out of school activities, behaviour, anti-bullying physical intervention and exclusion together with our complaints procedures may be downloaded using the links below. They are also freely available from the school office.
