We would like to say a HUGE thank you to Sam Hull, Dan Tonkin and Marshfield Tennis Club for inviting Calder House to attend "Wimbledon at Marshfield" and for all of the help and support Sam and Dan have offered the pupils at Calder House every week during PE over the course of another amazing year... you've been ace!

We would like to congratulate every single child who entered this year's handwriting competition. The standard of the entries was exceptional and demonstrated not only the remarkable progress our pupils have achieved with their handwriting but also their creative flair and originality.

We celebrate the end of term in style with a special assembly recognising some of the remarkable achievements of our pupils. We also welcome former pupil, Jemima, (now studying at Westonbirt!) back to Calder House along with a very special surprise visitor... the Easter Bunny!

On a chilly day Calder House extended a very warm welcome to pupils from Colerne and Marshfield Primary Schools who visited us to compete in our Inter Schools Cross Country Tournament. Huge congratulations to all the children who took part - along with thanks to their teachers for helping to make this happen. Marshield put in a terrific performance to win the overall trophy but pupils from all three schools won medals - including our very own Josh who came first in the Y4 Boys' Race.

Salve! As we head towards the end of term, our Latin lessons give pupils a real taste of life in Aancient times... with a mouthwatering Roman feast. And well done Jack for joining in remotely from home. Get well soon!

This term in DT our upper school pupils have been cooking up a storm with some seriously tasty Mexican food while pupils in the lower school have been experimenting with tie-dye and proving that you can give a colourful twist to almost anything - even face-masks!.

World Book Day is always a VERY special day at Calder House and this year's celebrations were no exception with a murder in the library, a mystery-guest dinner party in Green Class, an invitation into Sherlock Holmes's study, a serene skyscape inspired by Jonathan Seagull, a fearsome pirate crew ransacking Blue Class, some Bear Grills style survival skills ...not to mention a selection of chocolate animal poo!

The South West Grid for Learning visited Calder House earlier this term to talk to pupils and parents about staying safe online. But the SWGfL team was so impressed by what they saw that they asked if they could come back with a film crew! So back they came to record our pupils' reflections on Internet Safety - in order to help create a resource for teachers and children in other schools.

It is February... and it is chucking it down outside! But just because it is raining, breaktime doesn't have to be a damp squib. The Purple and Brown Classes are set the challenge to buid a bridge between two desks or the tallest tower using simple wooden bricks... and no glue!

This year, we could not visit the elderly residents of the Bybook Nursing Home to sing carols in person because of the risks of spreading CV19. But the members of our school choir, led by Mrs Buckley, were determined to spread some festive fun and Christmas good cheer - so they organised a virtual carol singing concert instead!

Staff and pupils were delighted to welcome former pupil Beth G back to Calder House fresh from her GCSE year at Hayesfield School in Bath. And Beth seemed delighted to discover she is taller than Mr Perks! Beth is now looking forward to life in the sixth form and will be staying at Hayesfield in order to do her A'levels.

Many pupils arrive at Calder House with hand-writing that is hard to read ...and equally hard to produce. We are really proud of the progress we help pupils make in developing an efficient, cursive script that allows them to record their own ideas. Yes! It's that time of year again... it's WORLD BOOK DAY 2021. Pupils and staff at Calder House celebrate their passion for books and reading with a whole day of brilliant booky activities including the annual "dress the door" competition... which this year was better than ever!

The first half of this term has thrown up some unique challenges but we are really proud of the way everyone - our staff, our pupils and their parents - have pulled together to make it such a success. Teachers have worked exceptionally hard to support children while also keeping everyone as safe as possible. As a result, we have been able to welcome 42 of our 48 pupils back to school while also delivering a comprehensive programme of remote learning to those children who have remained at home. We would like to thank everyone for helping to make this happen.

As Calder House gets ready to celebrate World Book Day, Mr P asked pupils to snap a "shelfie" of their favourite books artfully arranged so as to tempt even the most reluctant reader!

On the last day of term, we held our first ever virtual Prize-Giving before each Class opened their cards and Secret Santa presents. Coral Class also revealled the spectacular paper chain they have been making and our New Head Girl received her badge from Mrs D.

Every year at Christmas time, pupils have sung carols at the Bybrook Nursing Home. And Mrs Delahay and Mrs Buckley were determined that - despite CV19 and social distancing - this year would be no exception! They arranged a live broadcast from the Hall in which every child was able to take part... beamed directly on to the big screen TV in the sitting room!

On the last full day of school before term ends, pupils swap their school shoes for wellies and head out side in search of Christmas clues... and festive treasure!

Because everyone loves to pat and pet him, poor old Freddie (our School Dog!) has been on fur-lough during the pandemic . However, he made a welcome return to the playground this week as a special birthday treat so pupils could sing Happy Birthday to him. Fingers crossed he will be back on duty early next term!

Reheasals for this year's virtual Christmas production are well under way with 12 socially-distanced drummers drumming, 11 pipers all from the same household piping, 10 lords a-leaping around in different isolated bubbles, 9 ladies dancing two meters apart...

Congratulations to all the children who have been appointed to positions of responsibility this term. This week classroom teaching restarted for our older pupils as we welcomed back children in the Purple Brown and Yellow classes. With timetabled handwashing breaks, social distancing, staggered drop off and collection times and even smaller class sizes, things look and feel quite different ...but our pupils are proving they can rise to the challenge!

We are so pleased to be able to welcome the first of our children back to school as we re-start face-to-face teaching. Things look a bit different since pupils were last here - with classrooms and the playground marked out to support social distancing - but it's great to so many smiling faces.

Huge thanks to Kevin West of the NSPCC who visited Calder House (twice!) this term. Kevin led a special assembly with our younger children and ran a workshop with older pupils to ensure that every child in the school is up to speed when it comes to staying safe.

"An amazing session with Cressida Cowell! The author of How to Train Your Dragon was so impressed with all of our children. She wanted them to spread some magic - it was just fantastic!" So said Mrs Delahay when Calder House visited Bath Literary Festival. As always, we made sure every child in the school was able to attend at least one Festival event!

The whole school went on a trip to historic Bath. And we certainly made the most of our time in the city - visiting a Mosque, exploring the famous Roman Baths and even climbing right up to the top of Bath Abbey's magnificent tower.

Calder House celebrates Sports Day with our traditional obstacle race , four field events, a tug of war and - of course - the water balloon fight. A BIG thank you to all the parents, grand-parents, brothers, sisters, friends and family who turned out to cheer on our pupils. To celebrate the end of SATS week, we took the whole school on a trip to Bristol. While older pupils set sail aboard the Matthew, our younger classes visited a Hindu Temple before everyone met up again at We The Curious for some hands-on science fun. It really was a journey of discovery!

We would like to say a HUGE thank you to the staff at Prior Park who visited Calder House with some of their star singers for a music workshop. As well as performing for our pupils, they helped the CHS choir help develop some beautiful harmonies in their performance of Lean On Me.

On the last day of term, we bid a fond farewell to Fergus (who is heading off to Secondary School!) and celebrated the start of the holidays in style (despite the pouring rain!) with the Annual Calder House Easter Egg Hunt.

On a gloriously sunny Spring day, Calder House welcomed pupils from Kingswood, Colerne, Stonar, Corsham, Springmead and Marshfield to our InterSchools X-Country Tournament. We would like to thank the staff from all the schools and all the mums and dads who turned out to cheer on the competitors. Huge congratulations to all those who took part - especially the awesome runners from Kingswood who lifted the Team Trophy!

When in Gold Class, do as the Romans do! Pupils took time out of their Latin lesson to enjoy an authentic Roman Feast and discover that eating while lying on your side isn't as comfy as it looks!

Huge thanks to Davina Spanes from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Brigade who visited Calder House for our Fire Safety Day. Every child in the school attended a workshop to learn about the dangers posed by fire-risks and how to recognise and avoid them.

To mark the anniversary of Robbie Burn's birth, pupils wore tartan to school and held a haggis-tasting session in Assembly. Surprisingly quite a few pupils even came back for seconds!!

It was with great pleasure – and enormous pride! – that we welcomed former CHS pupil Rory Turnbull to this year's Christmas Concert and Prize-Giving. Last year, Rory graduated from the University of Leeds with a First Class Degree in Medical Engineering. He is currently studying for a PhD in Robotics.

Freddie, our faithful School Dog, celebrated his eighth birthday in style with cake, popcorn and lots of hugs and strokes. Pupils even sang him a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday" before he went back on playground duty.

Once again HUGE thanks to Steve Brown and the other members of the Colerne Panthers on their return visit to Calder House. All our pupils really enjoyed their rugby skills session.

We're proud of the money (a whopping £231.04!!) that pupils raised for Children in Need. But we are also proud of HOW they raised it! Pupils rose to the challenge laid down by the Yellow Class to find ways of taking more personal responsibility and doing jobs around the house - including cleaning, washing up and making beds.
