Why do we do the ESB exams? The answer is: because they are difficult.
Each exam consists of three elements: (1) reading a passage from a favourite book or story with expression while paying attention to punctuation; (2) giving a short talk on a subject of your choice then confidently fielding unscripted questions from the examiner and audience; and (3) reciting a poem or passage of verse aloud from memory without the text in front of you.
These exams are not easy. Almost allchildren would find them a difficult and daunting prospect. But for our pupils they are particularly tough. They test all of the things that the children of Calder House have found most challenging - reading, remembering, performing and thinking on your feet.
Our pupils' success in these exams is a wonderful measure of the distance they have travelled since joining us. Moreover the experience of success in these exams, helps restore our children's faith in their own abilities and recognise the progress they are making.
Every child in the school was entered for the exams. And every single child passed their exam with 39 children being awarded either a distinction or a merit plus - the two highest grades!
The examiner who visited Calder House even commented that some of the poems our pupils had chosen to learn by heart were more ambitious than those chosen by pupils she had recently examined at Secondary School!
We are really proud of every child's performance in these exams. Each result represents a personal triumph and reason to celebrate!
