Pupils from Calder House have done exceptionally well in this year’s English Speaking Board exams… again!
The ESB exam is an external examination designed to test reading and public speaking skills. Each child has to recite a poem from memory, read aloud from a favourite book, give a talk on a subject of their choice and then answer questions on it – all things that our pupils would have found particularly challenging in the past.
46 pupils took the exam: every single child passed and 27 pupils managed to achieve either a Distinction or a Merit Plus - the two highest possible grades!
Only two pupils did not take the exam this year – one had to pull out when he broke his leg; the other had been at CHS for less than half a term when the exams took place.
“I’d like to congratulate the children, their parents and our staff on these terrific results,” said Mrs Delahay, Head of School. “A lot of hard work goes into preparing our pupils for these exams but it’s all worth it when you get results like these. They remind us all – once again – what are pupils can achieve with the right support and self-belief.”
