Karen Parsons to Join CHS from Royal High Junior School

20 March, 2015

We are absolutely delighted to be able to announce that we have appointed our new Headteacher.

There was, we are pleased to say, a lot of interest in this role and we were in the fortunate position of being able to draw up a shortlist of four candidates all of whom had very impressive credentials. However, one person stood out very clearly from the outset and it was apparent from the moment she walked through the gates, that this person was the very person we were hoping to find.

This person is Mrs Karen Parsons – currently Deputy Head at the Royal High Junior School, Bath.

First and foremost Mrs Parsons is a very able teacher. To successfully lead our teaching staff, our Head needs to be a really good teacher themselves. And Mrs Parsons is just that. Her current responsibilities at the Royal High include being Head of the Maths Department. Calder House has benefited enormously from having an inspirational maths teacher as our Head for the last seven years. And we are delighted that we now have another. Moreover, Mrs Parsons brings a wealth of teaching experience that spans the entire curriculum. During the interview process we asked her to step in and “cover” an English lesson. She did so brilliantly. So when it comes to basic teaching ability, I know that Mrs Parsons has got what it takes.

But as well as being a gifted teacher, our Head also needs to be an effective administrator – a great organiser, a clear thinker and a good communicator. Again, on this front, we are confident we have found the right person. Mrs Parsons is all of these things. But she is also kind and good humoured. As well as impressing us with her ability during the interviews, she also made us laugh. She will be methodical and careful when, for instance, drawing up pupils’ timetables and preparing for Annual Reviews. But she will also be approachable and friendly – to staff, parents and, most importantly, pupils. It was immediately evident that pupils really liked Mrs Parsons and that, on a very simple level, she gets our kids and what Calder House is all about.

Mr Day has been a big part of Calder House’s story and we are enormously grateful for everything he has helped us to achieve. In Karen Parsons we feel confident we have found the right person to lead Calder House into the next chapter of this story. We believe we have been really lucky to find her and we very much look forward to working with her.

So, as we prepare to say farewell and thanks  to Andrew, we  hope you will all join everyone here in welcoming Karen to our school.
