Former CHS pupil launches interactive podcast
27 October, 2018
Former pupil Ben G recently made a welcome return to Calder House to talk to our current cohort of pupils about his passion for reading and love of books.
It is fair to say, however, that Ben hasn't always been such a big fan of reading.
"When I arrived at this school, I couldn't really read at all. To be honest, I hated books - I didn't even want to pick them up." Ben explains. "It is strange to think back to that time because now reading is really important to me. I am confident reader who really enjoys books - especially the Warrior Cats Series. And, by the way, if you haven't read any of the Warrior Cat collection, you are seriously missing out!"
Ben wants spread the word to other young people who find reading difficult. As well as talking about his own experiences, he also presented Calder House with a collection of books from his favourite series. Ben's gift to the school - like the the example that he is setting - will help inspire future generations of Starfish to follow in his footsteps.
"We are all really proud of Ben and everything he has achieved." beamed Mr Perks. "It is true that he has made remarkable progress with his reading. However, the thing that is even more impressive than WHAT Ben has achieved, is HOW he has achieved it. In order to make progress, Ben had to conquor his fear of getting things wrong and learn to take risks. This wasn't easy and Ben had to really battle to overcome the things he found difficult - just like the heroic characters in some of these books. In the end, Ben triumphed because he worked hard, faced his fears and didn't give up."
Calder House is delighted and very proud to appoint Ben as a CHS Reading Ambassador in recognition of his personal achievements and determination to help other young people learn to read and also learn to love reading. Keep up the good work Ben!
